On a beautiful Mother’s Day morning, before the M/S Mount Washington set off for our annual brunch cruise, our crew and the Lewis family gathered for a rare and solemn tradition. In the long history of our fleet, few moments carry as much weight as the naming of a new Captain. Today, we are proud to share the remarks delivered during the commissioning of Michael Lewis—a leader whose rapid rise through the ranks is matched only by his dedication to our passengers and the maritime heritage of Lake Winnipesaukee.
Remarks from Jared Maraio, General Manager
Good morning, everyone. Before we welcome our first guests of the season and begin another season on the lake, we have a significant duty to perform.
In the history of this fleet, the title of 'Captain' for the Mount Washington has never been given lightly. It is a rare honor, earned through many hours of vigilance and a deep respect for our mission. To put that into perspective: Michael Lewis will be only the 25th person in more than 150 years to command the Mount.
Mike, if the honor itself were not enough, you have also reached this rank faster than anyone in our recorded history. That isn’t just a testament to your hard work; it is a testament to your natural capability.
For the many new faces joining our crew this season, you will soon learn why Mike was the clear choice for this honor. His professionalism and leadership are exemplary, but it’s his humility that truly defines him. He is the first to do the work and the last to take the credit. He understands that while the Captain holds the ultimate responsibility, it is the crew that gives the ship its soul.
Our mission here is simple: we keep people safe, and we make them happy.
Mike embodies both sides of that coin. We’ve all seen his technical precision, but many of us also remember the version of Mike from our annual Make-a-Wish cruise. Seeing our future Captain suddenly leading a massive conga line through the ship to make sure every child on board had the time of their lives... that is the heart of a Captain. He knows when to be the authority, and he knows when to be the joy.
Mike, your family is here today to see the culmination of your dedication. We are proud to have them with us as you officially take the helm. Your wife, along with Senior Captain Paul Smith, will now present you with your new stripes.
Crew, please join me in congratulating the 25th Captain of the M/S Mount Washington, Captain Michael Lewis.
